Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has been made available through a grant opportunity given by Chase Bank.

The goal of this program is to build financial stability and economic independence by targeting low income tax payers.

Chase Bank, in partnership with the United Ways of Porter and Lake County, accomplish this goal by assisting with tax preparation and electronic filing of tax returns, as well as educating tax payers about the following topics:

• Exploitive tax preparation services and high interest refund anticipation loans,
• A basic understanding of money management the benefit of a bank account,
• Claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)and all other credits that they are entitled,
• Electronically filing returns for expedited tax refunds,
• Making plans to use tax refunds toward asset development
